This sculpture, inspired by a Remington painting, depicts an American Indian of the Sioux tribe, holding a bison scull above his head, conducting a spiritual ritual to bring back the bison herds, which were decimated almost to extinction by foreign hunters.
The figure is emaciated by famine and hardship because of the bison’s disappearance and portrays the American Indian’s acknowledgement of and need for communication with a spiritual dimension.
