Joan of Arc

The Joan of Arc that Tienie portrayed is her spiritual being, relieved of her earthly burdens after her execution by burning at the stake. She is liberated and victorious, assuming the saintly identity she will be commemorated for. The nudity of the sculpture is symbolic of this spiritual liberation. It is also a celebration of her femininity. During her trial her preference for male attire was controversial. The nudity of the sculpture is a revelation of the true Joan, stripped of the attire she wore as a means of protection, but which ironically proved to be the final point upon which she was branded a heretic and condemned.#
